2008 Advocacy Agenda Summary

 
Economic Justice & Poverty
Affordable Housing & Homelessness
-Ongoing funding for the state Housing Trust Fund
-Increasing funding for programs assisting homeless people
-Increasing funding for weatherization and emergency repair of low income homes
-Funding for supportive housing

Family-Sustaining Income
-Funding for the TANF program to help TANF families move to family-sustaining employment
-Funding for the state Family Opportunity Accounts program
-Restoring child care eligibility to 200% of the federal poverty level and providing more funding to increase the quality of child care assistance
-Funding to increase foster care rates and for transitional services for children aging out of foster care
-Increasing funding for the LIHEAP program
-Increasing funding for more Income Support Division workers

Health Care
-Providing affordable and accessible health care for all New Mexicans
-Maintaining and expanding Medicaid coverage & benefits for low-income children and adults
-Increasing funding for primary care clinics

Hunger
-Increasing supplemental state funding for seniors receiving the minimal Food Stamp benefit
-Increasing funding for nutrition assistance programs, including the Food Banks’ produce transportation and Food for Kids programs as well as the Farmers’ Market --Nutrition Enhancement program
-Increasing funding for the Elementary School Breakfast program

Tax Policy
-Working for tax policy that is fair and provides stable, adequate revenue to meet the needs of the most vulnerable
-Enacting combined reporting legislation

Human & Civil Rights
Death Penalty
-Repealing capital punishment  
  
Civil Rights
-Supporting basic legal rights in domestic partnerships

Human Rights
-Enacting human trafficking provisions that include victims' protections and services

The ELCA constitution states "In faithfulness to its calling, this church is committed to defend human dignity, to stand with the poor and powerless people, to advocate justice, to work for peace, and to care for the earth in the processes and structures of contemporary society."
