2010 Advocacy Agenda Summary

 
Poverty & Hunger
Affordable Housing & Homelessness
     A dedicated funding source for the state Housing Trust Fund
     Funding for programs that assist homeless people
     Funding for weatherization
     Funding for supportive housing & to implement the Housing First model

Family-Sustaining Income
     Funding and implementation of the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families program to help families move to family-sustaining employment
     State funding for Individual Development Accounts
     Maintaining child care eligibility at 200% of the federal poverty level & funding for quality early childhood programs
     Adequate funding for the foster care program
     State funding for the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program
     Curbing predatory lending

Health Care
     Providing affordable and accessible health care for all New Mexicans
     Maintaining recently expanded Medicaid coverage & benefits for low-income children and adults
     Workers Compensation coverage for farm & ranch workers

Hunger
     Increasing enrollment in nutrition assistance programs
     Funding the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (Food Stamp) state supplement program
     Supporting efforts to close New Mexico’s food gap & funding for food banks
     Further implementation of the Elementary School Breakfast program

Tax Policy
     Working for tax policy that is fair and provides stable, adequate revenue to meet the needs of the most vulnerable
     Enacting combined reporting legislation that requires out-of-state corporations to pay their fair share of taxes
     Oversight of state tax credits and incentives

Other issues   
Services for families who are victims of murder
     Supporting legislation to allow families of murder victims to attend judicial proceedings without losing their jobs
     Working to increase funding for services for families of murder victims

Civil Rights
     Supporting basic legal rights in domestic partnerships

The ELCA constitution states "In faithfulness to its calling, this church is committed to defend human dignity, to stand with the poor and powerless people, to advocate justice, to work for peace, and to care for the earth in the processes and structures of contemporary society."
